Having contributed to our MBA programmes since 2003, Xavier is now responsible for the strategic direction of MBA programmes and the development and delivery of transnational education (TNE) at Manchester Business School. Key to these responsibilities is ensuring both that the MBA curriculum is kept current, innovative and fit for purpose and that more than 2,000 students on our MBA programmes receive an outstanding learning and administrative experience.

Xavier is passionate about innovation in business and management education and meeting the new demands posed on MBA programmes by technology improvements and a highly dynamic and globalised business environment.

Dr Jiyao Xun

Dr Jiyao Xun

Associate MBA Director (Asia), AMBS

Dr Jiyao Xun manages various business school programmes across Asia (academic, partnership, teaching support, China study tours and student recruitment).

He has an illustrious UK education and work background. He previously worked for Tesco PLC’s venture into China before joining the academia field where he then taught at various academic institutions including University of Nottingham Executive training in UK, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool University’s China campus in Suzhou, UTS Australia’s China campus in Shanghai, and the MBA center at Shanghai University. His academic credentials include an MSc in Management Research from Oxford University, and a fully-funded PhD in Business & Management (Marketing) from Nottingham University UK. He is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) and the Associate MBA Director (Asia) & BSc (Singapore) Programme Director at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS).

His role as Associate MBA Director (Asia) & BSc (Singapore) Programme Director includes assisting AMBS and The University of Manchester Worldwide with strategy development and implementation for various programmes including the Global Part-time MBA programmes across Asia. This also includes managing the academic affairs for AMBS' three Asian centres, student recruitment and managing partnership institutions in China and Singapore.

Dr Ismail Erturk

Dr Ismail Erturk

Senior Lecturer, AMBS

Dr Ismail Ertürk joined the School in January 1987, having worked previously for a merchant bank in Istanbul. From 1982-1983 he was a research fellow at Hull University. He then continued his postgraduate studies at New York University where he specialised in banking. He has taught corporate finance, bank financial management and international finance on both the School’s MBA and Executive Centre programmes. He currently teaches the core theme of Leading and Managing in a Global Environment on the Global Part-time MBA programme at Alliance Manchester Business School.

In recent years his teaching reflects his research interests in financialization and financial innovation that he investigates as part of an inter-disciplinary team at CRESC at the University of Manchester. He has undertaken advisory work for companies and government institutions internationally and has developed and directed senior banking programmes for the Executive Centre. He has held visiting positions on Executive MBA Programmes at Stockholm School of Economics, St Petersburg, Istanbul Bilgi University, and ESCP-EAP, Paris. Dr. Erturk is a regular commentator on global business news programmes.

Professor Patrick Mcnutt

Professor Patrick Mcnutt

Visiting Fellow, AMBS

Professor Patrick McNutt has had a distinguished career in academics, business and the public service. Appointed Professor of Political Economy at the age of 37, he has since used his expertise to head up public sector organizations in both the UK and Ireland and to provide strategic advice and executive coaching to private companies across the globe. Examples from his wide-ranging career include: World Bank panel of experts; Chairman of the Irish Competition Authority; drafting the Competition Law for the island of Jersey, Channel Islands and establishing its regulatory office and framework; acting as facilitator and executive coach for a leading UK law firm. Other assignments have included providing Board level advice in a financial services company and advising financial analysts, both in Geneva and Cairo, on economic trends and strategic asset investments.

He currently teaches on the Global Part-time MBA programme at Alliance Manchester Business School with responsibility for modules on Managerial Economics and Ethics and Governance. He is particularly knowledgeable about the economies of China and of Asia in general and appears regularly on both CNBC, Bloomberg and Channel News Asia while in the region. He is also an occasional contributor on Thomson Reuters Insider. He continues to write and research and in the past year has published two books: Game Embedded Strategy, which is geared towards a business and management audience, and Political Economy of Law, which is geared towards a legal and regulatory compliance audience.

Professor McNutt was recently named the '2018 AMBS Academic Staff of the Year', and was awarded an Alliance MBS Teaching Award for his work on the Global MBA programme as voted for by the student body.

Professor Arif Khurshed

Professor Arif Khurshed

Professor of Finance, AMBS

Professor Arif Khurshed completed his PhD from the ICMA Centre, University of Reading and joined the University of Manchester as a post-doctoral research associate in 1999. A year later he took up a lectureship in Finance. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005 and then to Professor of Finance in 2013.

He is on the editorial board of the British Accounting Review and have been an external consultant to the UK Financial Conduct Authority (formerly FSA) and the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA). He is one of the founding members of the British Northern Universities India Forum (BNUIF) which was setup in 2008 to produce and disseminate research surrounding issues of economic development in India.

Professor Arif currently teaches on the Global Part-time MBA programme at Alliance Manchester Business School with responsibility for modules on Business Accounting and Finance.

Dr Stephen Brookes

Programme Director of MSc International Healthcare Leadership

Dr Stephen Brookes is also the author of ‘The Selfless Leader’ published in 2016 and the co-editor of two further books that consider the new public leadership challenge and the importance of trust and confidence. He is also the Editor of the International Journal of Public Leadership, which is published by Emerald.

Prior to joining The University of Manchester twelve years ago, he served as a senior police officer and senior civil servant for over 30 years, and is an increasingly accomplished international academic in the field of public leadership. He also regularly provides international leadership and organisational development to middle and senior managers from across the public sector.

He currently teaches on the Global Part-time MBA programme at Alliance Manchester Business School with responsibility for modules on Negotiation Skills.
